background

Kibera is a low-income settlement area, the largest slum in Nairobi, and the largest urban slum in Africa
Baraka Za Ibrahim Children Centre was founded by the late Praxedes Masila, a simple English and Music Teacher, who used to teach in a public school in Langata, next to Kibera in the 1980s.
On her way back from school, she would bump into a group of street children who she used to play football with every evening at her residential house along Karanja Road in Kibera. These children were not attending public schools as they were from poor and disorganized families, hence they were said to be "undisciplined, filthy and somehow insane" because of sniffing glue and taking drugs.
Her benevolent, compassionate, and passionate nature inspired her to set up a charitable foundation in 1988 to accommodate them, Baraka Za Ibrahim Children's Center, (Blessings of Abraham) in Gatwekera village in the heart of Kibera, to rescue children from insecurity, broken homes, poor living conditions, negligence, and societal ignorance.
She grouped the steet children by age and academic ability, leading to the formation of classrooms. Her favorite bible verse was Psalms 23:5 "My Cup Runneth Over" and she trully believed that a life not lived for others is not a life.
Today, Baraka Za Ibrahim Center includes a Primary School, Secondary School, Rescue Center, Family Support and Community integration programs.
